Erickson-Hall Wins Build San Diego Award

Construction Teams Honored By Associated General Contractors

The San Diego chapter of the Associated General Contractors honored six construction teams for their work on active projects at the 2013 Build San Diego Awards on Nov. 7.

A panel of four judges evaluated the nominees for excellence in project management; innovation in construction techniques or materials; excellence in client service; contractor’s contribution to the community as it relates to the project; and meeting the challenges of a difficult job.

Turner Construction was awarded best team in the public works building construction category for its work on the new 295,000-square-foot San Diego Central Library.

The joint venture of Barnhart-Reese Construction and Kitchell Corp. took home the best private works building construction category for the three-story Douglas and Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista.

The Kiewit/Sundt Joint Venture won in the heavy highway construction category for its work on the San Diego International Airport Green Build Landside Project, which included a four-lane elevated departure roadway with Smart Curb check-in; transit center for buses, shuttles and taxis; a combined United Services Organizations and parking management office; and improvements to access roads and parking areas.

Erickson-Hall Construction was given the Unique Small Project Award for public works for the reconstruction and expansion of Escondido Fire Station No. 4.

The Unique Special Project Award went to Turner/PCL/Flatiron Joint Venture for the San Diego International Airport Green Build Terminal 2 expansion project.

The Sustainable Project Award went to Swinerton Builders for the University of California, San Diego Charles David Keeling Apartments, a 510-bed student apartment building featuring solar panels that allow residents to use water heated by sunlight instead of gas and electricity.

In addition, a series of Merit Awards were presented within some of the above categories as a result of the number of construction projects nominated for awards this year.

Balfour Beatty Construction, Brady Company San Diego Inc., Clark Construction/McCarthy Joint Venture and Hensel Phelps Construction Co. each received Merit Awards for building construction for public works project.

Bergelectric, Clark Construction Group and PCL Construction received Merit Awards for building construction for private works project.

Flatiron won a Merit Award for heavy highway construction.

Flatiron and Sundt Construction Inc. received Merit Awards for Unique Small Project Award for public works.

RA Burch Construction got a Merit Award for unique special project.

Balfour Beatty Construction won a Merit Award for sustainable project.

Also, a Special Recognition Award was presented to Kilroy Realty Corp. for providing four acres of vacant land and extensive environmental engineering support for AGC’s Apprenticeship Program and Education and Safety Programs.

More than 400 guests attended the afternoon’s festivities at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.
